Students learn about brain scanning

SIX Year 12 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students and two teachers from the Psychology Department at Jerudong International School (JIS) recently visited the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital for a tour of the brain scanning facilities at the hospital’s Radiology Department.

A press release by JIS said the trip began with an introduction to the brain scanning facilities before a tour of the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning rooms. A radiographer from the hospital explained the procedures as well as strengths and limitations of the machines to the students.

The students also viewed a mini exhibition by the Radiology Department on the range of scans available.

They also spoke with the staff to learn more about the department in general.

The press release said the visit would help the students learn more about brain scanning techniques as part of the IB Psychology syllabus, as well as enhance their understanding of the relationship between physiology (the brain) and cognitions known as mental processing (thinking, language, attention, perception and memory).

In IB Psychology, students learn about brain scanning in the biological and cognitive levels of analysis, as it is a way of collecting data on brain activity and connections between the brain and behaviour.

IB Coordinator at JIS Dr Colin Dickinson said, “JIS is very grateful to RIPAS Hospital for allowing our students to visit and learn from their staff. It was a great opportunity to see how the theory taught in school is actually used to treat patients.”
