JIS students hold educational trip to Tasek Merimbun

TASEK Merimbun is Brunei’s only national heritage park located in Tutong District. The park is famous for having a black-water lake and over 30 crocodiles use the lake as their home. Forty-eight IB Diploma and A-Level students accompanied by six Biology staff from Jerudong International School (JIS) set off on the 70-minute bus journey to complete their coursework.

IB Diploma students need to complete an Internal Assessment which makes up 20 per cent of their overall grade. A-Level students need to develop field work skills that they will be examined on at the end of the course.

Upon arrival they met the park rangers who took them through a short trail, known as the ‘Banunih Trail’, 650 metres through the jungle near the lake.

The students spent the next two days planning and carrying out their own practical work on the plants in the jungle, that included measuring leaves and trunks, looking at lichen and diseased plants, checking light, water and canopy cover. The next day, students had the opportunity to explore the longer trail known as the ‘Merimbun Botanical Trail’ before visiting the Butterfly Garden.
