Pupils in the Junior School are provided with opportunities to become involved with a range of exciting, challenging and significant projects that are linked to their community and the environment. Important co-curricular links with local causes, charities and environmental issues are established as we strive to raise students’ awareness and sense of social and ecological responsibility.

Trips and excursions are an integral aspect of education in the Junior School and these expeditions broaden a student’s understanding of work that is being covered in class. Visits to places of interest including; fire stations, the beach, jungle parks, national monuments and tourist attractions occur on a regular basis. In Years 4, 5, and 6 students also have the opportunity to go on a residential trip which involves them in outward bound and team work challenges. These activities broaden students’ experiences and ability to be more self-sufficient.

In the Junior School, students will begin to learn about charitable causes and become involved in a number of fund-raising events both locally and internationally. Fund-raisers vary widely from small sponsored events; including, bake and card sales, non-uniform days or colour themed days, sponsored fun-runs and regular coin-snakes. Charity events are usually held once a term, in aid of varying causes. The Junior School has also forged strong links with the Special Education Unit in Brunei who provide education and rehabilitation services for physically and intellectually challenged children. Funds raised go towards special equipment including; wheelchairs, laptops, specially designed desks, chairs and learning materials.

Our aim is to promote education for sustainable development, through awareness raising and practical action. Environmental education takes place at JIS on a number of levels within the formal curriculum and as extra-curricular activities. Pupils, in the Junior Eco Club, are involved in various environmental initiatives including recycling, energy conservation, the Eco Garden, beach clean-ups and Earth Day.
